Amit is a seasoned public financial management, public policy and international development professional. He served in the Finance & Investment Vice Presidency of The World Bank in Washington DC from 1996-2021. Earlier, from 1983-1995, he served in Gujarat and West Bengal states in field and secretariat positions, as a member of the Indian Administrative Service. 

He has worked with more than fifty governments, helping improve national and sub-national expenditure management and revenue mobilization, and accelerate last-mile public service delivery – key elements of effective, capable, and responsive states. 

He has reviewed public expenditures and budgetary outcomes in high-, middle-, low-income and fragile countries, helping improve the efficiency and effectiveness of public spending and strengthen institutional capacity. Most of his work was in close collaboration with UN agencies, the European Commission and Council, the Asian and African Development Banks, the New Development Bank, USAID, the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and other partners.

In 2022, he and his wife co-founded Green2Moro LLC, which aims to facilitate the transition to green economies, including through analytics, policy research and advocacy.
